Saints Row Series
The Saints Row games in Ricardo Neudorfer's library.
Saints Row is an open-world action game series by Volition. Four entries from the series are in Ricardo's library, all on Steam.
Saints Row 2
Saints Row 2 is the strongest entry in the series. Set in Stilwater, it follows the protagonist of the first game waking from a coma to rebuild the Third Street Saints gang. The tone is a deliberate counterpoint to the increasingly cinematic Grand Theft Auto IV — chaotic, comedic, and packed with over-the-top activities.
What makes it stand out: The co-operative multiplayer, the variety of side activities, the Stilwater map design, and the radio stations. The balance between story and sandbox is well-maintained. It holds up.
Saints Row: The Third
The Third moved the setting to Steelport and leaned further into absurdity. The Saints are now celebrities, and the story involves a criminal syndicate taking control of their city. Mechanics were streamlined compared to Saints Row 2, and the tone became more self-aware. It is a polished game that sacrificed some depth for accessibility.
Saints Row: The Third Remastered
A visual overhaul of The Third with updated lighting, textures, and character models. The gameplay is identical to the original. The remaster runs better on modern hardware and looks significantly better, making it the recommended version.
Saints Row: Gat out of Hell
A standalone expansion set after Saints Row IV, following fan-favourite character Johnny Gat in a version of Hell. Shorter than a full entry, it is more of a coda to the series arc. It has wing-based free flight which makes traversal more interesting than the base games.
Saints Row IV
Set in a simulation of Steelport, Saints Row IV gave the player superpowers — sprint, leap, glide, telekinesis, and elemental powers — and abandoned conventional gunplay as the primary loop. The movement system is among the most enjoyable in any open-world game. As a pure sandbox it is excellent, though it departed so far from the series' roots that it effectively ended the original continuity.
